How this calculator works
- Apply 72.5¢ per business mile and 20.5¢ per medical or eligible moving mile from January 1 through June 30, 2026.
- Apply the revised 76¢ business rate and 23.5¢ medical or eligible moving rate from July 1 through December 31.
- Apply the statutory 14¢ charitable rate throughout the year.
What the result does not include
- The amounts are kept separate because each category follows different eligibility and reporting rules.
- Commuting is not business mileage, and this tool does not compare the standard-mileage method with actual vehicle expenses.
Common questions
Standard mileage or actual expenses — which is better?
Standard mileage usually wins for higher-mileage, lower-cost vehicles; actual expenses usually wins for expensive vehicles driven fewer miles. If you want the option to switch later, you must use the standard rate in the first year the car is in service.
Does commuting count?
No. Driving between home and your regular workplace is a personal expense. Travel between job sites, to clients, and to temporary work locations does count.
What records do I need?
A contemporaneous log with date, destination, business purpose, and miles for each trip. "Contemporaneous" means written at the time, not reconstructed in April. This is the single most commonly disallowed deduction in an audit.
Can I add all three mileage amounts together as one deduction?
No. Business, medical, moving, and charitable mileage follow different eligibility rules and appear in different parts of a tax return. This calculator shows rate-based amounts; it does not determine whether your medical, moving, or charitable miles are deductible.
